1.「It caught me off guard.」
意味：
不意を突かれた
例文：
The earthquake caught me completely off guard.
TIPS：
“catch someone off guard” は、予想外のことが起きて驚くときの表現。突然地震が起きて、心の準備ができていなかった状況にぴったりです。
2.「That was a strong one.」
意味：
今のは大きかったね
例文：
That was a strong one. Are you okay?
TIPS：
“one” は、ここでは「地震」を指します。同じ名詞を繰り返さず、会話らしく伝えられる表現です。
3.「The whole building was shaking.」
意味：
建物全体が揺れていた
例文：
The whole building was shaking for a few seconds.
TIPS：
“The building shook.” よりも、揺れている最中の様子が伝わる表現。“whole” を入れると「建物全体が」という驚きを強調できます。
4.「The shaking wouldn’t stop.」
意味：
なかなか揺れが収まらなかった
例文：
The shaking wouldn’t stop, and I started to panic.
TIPS：
“wouldn’t stop” は、単に長く続いたというより「なかなか止まってくれなかった」という不安な感覚を表します。
5.「There was an aftershock.」
意味：
余震があった
例文：
There was an aftershock early this morning.
TIPS：
「余震」は “aftershock”。最初の地震のあとに再び揺れたことを伝えるときに使います。
6.「Things fell off the shelves.」
意味：
棚から物が落ちた
例文：
Things fell off the shelves, but nothing broke.
TIPS：
“fall off” は「〜から落ちる」。棚の上の商品や家の物が、揺れで落ちた状況にそのまま使えます。
7.「No damage, thankfully.」
意味：
幸い、被害はなかった
例文：
It shook pretty hard, but no damage, thankfully.
TIPS：
“thankfully” は「幸いにも」。地震は強かったものの、被害がなく安心した気持ちを短く伝えられます。
8.「The epicenter was off the coast.」
意味：
震源は沖合だった
例文：
They said the epicenter was off the coast.
TIPS：
「震源」は “epicenter”、“off the coast” は「沖合で」。ニュースで知った地震情報について話すときに便利です。
9.「We should be ready for aftershocks.」
意味：
余震に備えたほうがいいね
例文：
We should be ready for aftershocks tonight.
TIPS：
“be ready for ～” は「〜に備える」。怖がらせすぎずに、今後の余震への注意を呼びかける言い方です。
10.「It knocked out the power.」
意味：
地震で停電した
例文：
The earthquake knocked out the power in our area.
TIPS：
“knock out the power” は、地震や嵐などが原因で電気が使えなくなることを表す自然な言い方。“There was a power outage.” より原因に焦点を当てた表現です。
